Back from the Outback and off again…
27 September 2012
Over the last few weeks we were in Outback NSW as part of Jon Rose‘s Sound Circus, we went all the way to Cameron’s Corner the ‘town’ at the corner of QLD, NSW and SA. Cameron’s Corner the town is made up of one pub cleverly called “Cameron’s Corner Store”. You can camp there for a donation that you throw up to the ceiling of the pub with a push pin poked through your $5 bill and a 20c piece inside to help it hurl into the soft ceiling. The roof is covered in money that is pulled down once a year and donated to the Flying Doctors. We set Gigloo and Mixtape up at Cameron’s Corner. Gigloo in the desert was a bit of a dream come true for me. I also learnt how to crack a whip.

Whipcrackin’ at Cameron’s Corner |
Cameron’s Corner was our furthest stop from Sydney. Julian Day from ABC Classic FM made a piece about our first tour stop, White Cliffs. You can listen here. There’s also more ABC Sound Circus stuff here.
White Cliffs is an old opal mining town. We were able to stay in a guy’s dug out (an old mine that has been converted into a house) as he was out of town and people in White Cliffs are pretty open…
We met a little kid who when we asked what he did around here he said “pig hunting” and when he was asked what he did when he found one he answered frankly, “stab ’em”. We also met a guy at the pub who said he’d been away for castrating a man he found out was a pedophile. There is definitely a feeling of lawlessness or a kind of self-governing out there, I guess that might have something to do with the nearest cop being 93km away. I’d go back there for sure but not just yet – I leave for Montreal on Monday…
